Introduction to Mallakhamb:

Mallakhamb! the name itself indicates that "Malla" means wrestler and  "Khamb" means pole. It's a wrestler's pole. In 'Manas-olhas' by Someshwar Chalukya and 'Manusmruti ' had the earliest refrences about the Mallakhamb.Then, on the 17th Century Shri.BalambhattaDada Deodhar introduced this game to others.

There are many types of Mallakhamb as Pole, Rope,Hanging, Niradhar ( without support), on cane, on floating platform, Mallakhamb with weapons, etc. But at competitive level only Pole, Rope and Hanging Mallakhamb are being performed by MallakhambPatus. The boys are performing on Pole, Rope and Hanging Mallakhamb and girls on Rope Mallakhamb.

It is a good exercise to our body specially for backbone.Our whole body gets a message while performing on Mallakhamb. So, let's come together to promote the Pure Indian  activity!

Benefits of Mallakhamb:

Mallakhamb is a natural form of exercise. The strength, stamina, power of a body is improved by performing Mallakhamb. It is a full body development sport and a natural way to develop our body. This game is a mother discipline which builds an ideal physical body structure.

The strength, stamina etc. required for the sports like football, swimming, hockey, tennis etc. can be improved by performing Mallakhamb. The concentration which is required for the students while doing studies and the players of chess, carom,shooting etc. can be improved by performing the elements on the top part of the Mallakhamb known as 'Bond'.

For girls and ladies, Rope mallakhamb  is a good exercise to keep their body in proper shape and size.

The Wrestler's are using the Mallakhamb to practice various elements ( Dava's) on it an apponant. It's a good sport and unique combination of meditation and gymnastics which helps us to develop a healthy mind and sound body. It's not only developes the muscles of the body but also improves our circulatory system of the body. It is a good erxecise to control over limbs.

The twisting and turning around the Pole, massages the entire body.

Shorter people can perform Mallakhmb easily. The mallakahmb player ( MallakhambPatu ) is performing many Yogasana's on a Mallakhamb which helps him/her to keep the body in proper shape and size.

Types of Mallakhamb:

  • Pole (A vertical wooden Pole, which is 90*  to the ground.. Player's r performing various elements on it.)
  • Rope (A string  made up of Navar, on which mainly girls are performing many types of elements).
  • Hanging (A wooden Pole which hangs to the upper support and swings freely above the ground on which players are performing various elements).
  • Niradhar (It is a Wooden Pole which is supportless).
  • Cane Mallakhamb (This type of Mallakhamb is made up of Cane, onwhich players are performing the elements which r difficult to perform on Cane stic.)
  • Mallakhamb on Bottles (This type of Mallakhamb is performing by players on the Bottles and wooden platform shown in the pitchure).
  • Mallakhamb on Floating platform (This type of Mallakhamb is performed by players on a floating platform which is floating on the river water.)
  • Mallakhmab with weapons (The MallakhambPatu performs this type of Mallakhamb with weapons in Hands and tighted to the bdy).
  • Vetacha Mallakhamb (This type of Mallakhamb is made up of Vet material).


Mallakahmb and Yoga:

Mallakhamb and Yoga are mostly similar sports activities.In Yoga, the player is performing various Yogasana's on a horizontal floor while the same Asana's can be performed by a player on a vertical Pole and Rope Mallakhamb.The 'MallaYoga' is a unique word for these two sports activities.
